New & Old Law

This is something that my brother, Robert, just wrote in regards to the Old Covenant vs New Covenant, self-defense, and where our real battle is. Please, take the time to read all the way through it, even though it is long. It is mainly scripture. Following Him,
Sara

Most Christians fail to understand the difference between the New Testament Covenant and the Old Testament Covenant, which has led to division and new denominations.  Most people just decide, based on common sense, what parts of the Old Testament they will follow.  Let's just look at Scripture.

"Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.  Matthew 5:17-18

We see very clearly here that the Law is going to be around until "heaven and earth pass away".  Question, why would it only stay until that time?  Answer: Because that is when Christ once and for all settles his score with sinners:

Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away."  Revelation 20:11-15, 21:1-4

It is no coincidence that Jesus states that the Law will not pass away until heaven and earth do because we find the purpose of the law stated in 1 Timothy 1:8-9:

But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

The Law will stay around long enough to denounce the deeds of those that tried to live under it.  Because Scripture makes it clear that anyone not under Christ is still under the Law.

Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.  Romans 3:19-20

We see very clearly from these verses that God gave the Law to show mankind that he was totally unable to live up to perfection.  For hundreds of years man tried to live up to God's law and utterly failed.  God then sent His Messiah, which He had planned to send and prophesied about, to perfectly live up to and fulfill the Law.  Only Jesus kept the Ten Commandments, dietary restrictions, feasts and all the other Laws of God perfectly.  He did not fail in one command.  Then He died.  The only perfect Law Keeper sacrificed Himself for every Law breaker, that if they would not depend on their righteous works (Romans 3:10, 23) for salvation, but trusted in Christ as their propitiation, He would save them, not on the basis of the law, but Grace, that is, unmerited favor.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,  not of works, lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

Notice that the old Law is based on works...

For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, "The man who does those things shall live by them." Romans 10:5

While the new Law was based on Faith, apart from works:

But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe.

Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith.  Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law.  Romans 3:21-22,27-28

So, the question isn't: Are we under the new Law or old Law?  Because Scripture is clear that we are under the new law.  The real question is:  What part of the old Law is a part of the new Law, and what parts aren't?  Well, it is the entire New Testament that teaches us the difference.  Like when Jesus says, "

"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'  But I tell you not to resist an evil person. Matthew 5:38-39

He was negating the old testament Law with a new commandment.  Why?  Because the new Law is based on Love, faith, and trust in God.  The Old law was based on judgment.  Therefore, the New Testament doesn't contain a single verse that explains the difference, but rather, it is the whole New Testament that leads us into a deeper and deeper revelation and understanding of our new role in His Kingdom of Love.  So when you find verses that seem to go against what God said in the past, it is because of the change in the Laws.  Examples:

Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. Colossians 2:16-17

What goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unclean,' but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him 'unclean.'" Matthew 15:11

I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died. Romans 14:14-15

He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air.  Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat."

"Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never eaten anything impure or unclean."

The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean." Acts 10:11-15

Was anyone called while circumcised? Let him not become uncircumcised. Was anyone called while uncircumcised? Let him not be circumcised. Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing, but keeping the commandments of God is what matters.  1 Corinthians 7:18-19

The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming--not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. If it could, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins,  because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

First he said, "Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them" (although the law required them to be made).  Hebrews 10:1-4, 8

All of these verses are contrary to the Law, which is why Paul wrote so much about the new Law, and why the old Law was no longer for our use (1 Timothy 1:8-9).  Once you begin to understand the separation of the two Laws and look for the differences you will begin to notice another profound truth.  Just as Jesus Christ received all of the Judgment of the old Law and was able to bear it, being spotless, so also Jesus received all of the benefits and authority of the old Law as well.  This is where many Christians want to have their cake and eat it too.  We accept that Jesus Christ died for our sins, and that we no longer have to obey the old Law to be saved, but we still want the authority that was given to those obeying the old Law so that we can judge others.  When Christ fulfilled the Law He alone received the authority to mete out the judgment written down in the old Testament.  That was profound for me to realize.  I wanted to be free from having to live up to the Law while still wanting the benefits of it!

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  Matthew 28:18-19
________________________________
There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you--who are you to judge your neighbor? James 4:12

Many Christians think that they automatically receive all of the authority of Christ, but Scripture makes it clear that we only receive the authority that He gives us.

And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations--

They shall be dashed to pieces like the potter's vessels'--

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: "Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. Revelation 12:10

Notice these verses only state the authority that Jesus gives, not the authority of the Law.  So if it only matters what authority Jesus gives, what authority does he give us in regard to judging others?

Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you--who are you to judge your neighbor? James 4:11-12
________________________________
For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? But those who are outside God judges. Therefore "put away from yourselves the evil person." 1 Corinthians 5:12-13

And why do we judge those "inside", because they are a part of the New Kingdom and Christ has given us authority to admonish and exhort one another.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.  Colossians 3:15-16

In fact in Romans 12:17-21 Jesus warns us to not take upon ourselves authority that he has not given us:

Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord.  Therefore

"If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
If he is thirsty, give him a drink;
For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head."

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

There is still so much more that is contained within Scripture as to the differences between the old and new Laws, the shadow of things to come, and the reality found in Christ, but that is why God has given us His Holy Spirit, that we might learn more and more as He reveals the freedom found in Christ.   Think about it, if I don't have the authority to judge those outside the Church, then I can focus my time on loving people like I'm commanded to!

For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. Romans 10:4

The verses below are not exhaustive, but lay down a solid argument for not PHYSICALLY defending yourself, or those around you.  After I understood the aforementioned difference in the new and old laws, all of Jesus' teachings finally didn't conflict anymore.  Read them for yourself to see if there can be any argument against the clear teachings of the Word.

Matthew 26:52-53
But Jesus said to him, "Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.  Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?

John 18:36
Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here."

Matthew 5:38-48
"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.  And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.  If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.  Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'  But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,  that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.  If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?  And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?  Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Luke 6:27-37
"But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,  bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.  If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic.  Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.  Do to others as you would have them do to you.

"If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' love those who love them.  And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' do that.  And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,' expecting to be repaid in full.  But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.  Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

Romans 12:17-21
Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody.  If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.  Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord.  On the contrary:

"If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head."

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

1 Peter 2:21 -23
For to this you have been called, because Christ also
suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in
his steps.
He committed no sin; no guile was found on his lips.  When he
was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not
threaten; but he trusted to him who judges justly.

John 12:25
Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their
life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

1 John 3:13
Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.

Matthew 10:28-31
And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father's will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

1 John 3:15
Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that
no murderer has eternal life residing in him.

1 Thessalonians 5:15-18
See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh.  For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,

Matthew 5:7-12
Blessed are the merciful,
For they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
For they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
For they shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

"Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Ephesians 4:31-32
Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.  And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

Hebrew 11:13-16
All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.  People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own.  If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country--a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

Luke 9:53-56
but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem.  When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?"  But Jesus turned and rebuked them,  And he said, "You do not know what kind of spirit you are of, for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them." And they went to another village.

James 2:24-26
And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

1 Corinthians 4:11-13
To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless.  We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it;  when we are slandered, we answer kindly. Up to this moment we have become the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world.

Romans 5:6-8
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Hebrews 12:1-7
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons:

"My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
because the Lord disciplines those he loves,
and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?

1 Peter 4:12-19
Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you.  But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.  If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.  If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler.  However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.  For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?  And,

"If it is hard for the righteous to be saved,
what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?"

So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

Ephesians 6:10-13
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

So after reading these verses that speak about loving our enemy, and doing no harm to our neighbor, and understanding that we are not supposed to judge those outside the church, a person may think, "So I'm just suppose to tell the murderer or rapist that comes to attack my family, 'Go ahead, I'm suppose to love you and let you do evil things.'?"  NO!  That's what's so amazing!  Every attack against a Christian, whether seemingly "random" or not comes from the spiritual war being fought!  Did Job just randomly have those bad things happen to him?  NO! It was Satan!  And yet people still think that when they have a flat tire and they're trying to get to church that it's just a random occurrence.  Don't you realize what Scripture says?

Ephesians 6:10-13
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

2 Corinthians 2:11
in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.

There really is a war being fought, and yet we act like it's not going on!  A person of the flesh sees a rapist/murderer/thief/enemy.  A follower of Christ is suppose to see the principalities and powers of darkness!  If you strike down the man physically, but you don't take care of the spiritual darkness that was behind his attack, then you are simply chopping off the flower, not the root.  THE MAN ISN'T THE PROBLEM!  THE SPIRITUAL DARKNESS IS!  And guess what?  JESUS DID GIVE YOU AUTHORITY TO TAKE DOMINION OVER THAT DARKNESS!

Matthew 10:7-8
And as you go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'  Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.
_____________________________
Mark 16:17-18
And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."
_____________________________
Luke 10:17-20
Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name."

And He said to them, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.  Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven."

I have heard countless stories, and I am sure most Christians have, about missionaries that have simply spoken the Word of God as their only defense and seen their would be attackers bound and unable to carry out the enemy's plans.  How many times has Christ defended His people physically?!  God is fully capable!  You might say, "but what about those that weren't protected from murder or rape?"  That is where you have to simply trust Him.  Jesus, Stephen, Paul, Peter, John the Baptist...etc. all died and were not spared.  Why?  Because Christ used their deaths.  Or do you not believe what Scripture says?

Romans 8:28
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Hebrews 11:13-16, 35-40
These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.  For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland.  And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return.  But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.

Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented-- of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth.

And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.

Death has no victory over us, so why are we afraid of it?

1 Corinthians 15:54-55
So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory."

"O Death, where is your sting?
O Hades, where is your victory?"

And in regard to the enemy:

1 John 4:4
You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

The sum of the matter is that we are called to fight the spiritual battle that is going on, and will continue to go on until Christ takes His rightful place as King of this world.  We need to stop being focused on ourselves, and instead be abandoned to the will of Christ, to fight His battles without reserve.

2 Timothy 2:3
You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

2 Timothy 4:6-8
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand.  I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.

1 Timothy 6:11-12
But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.  Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
