Delight Yourself Also in the Lord...

Psalm 37:4
Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

"Delight yourself also in the Lord." What does that really mean? How can you do that? The dictionary definition of 'delight' is: A high degree of pleasure or enjoyment; something that gives great pleasure. How often do we really do this? The first thing I think of that delights me is my family, friends, and animals. Yet we are supposed to delight in the Lord! We are supposed to be taking pleasure and enjoyment from spending time with Him. It isn't supposed to be something that we have to do, it should be something we can't wait to do! We should love talking to, and spending time with Him as much as going over to our best friends house, or playing a game, or whatever activity we "delight" in. Our delight should be on the Lord! He should be our focus and the center of all of our thoughts and actions. When most of us watch a movie that we really like, you can hear us quoting lines from certain parts that we really liked. We are delighting in the movie. Yet we are supposed to be delighting in the Lord, which means that after spending time with Him, we should be sharing what God taught us and what Scripture we read, as much as we share about movies and other things!

The second part of the verse is often taken out of context, "And He shall give you the desires of your heart." We take it to mean whatever we want at that moment, God will give us. That's incorrect. Most of our wants come from selfish ambition and pride. 'I want that. I need that. That would make me look so cool. Etc.' When we spend time with God, and are actually 'delighting' in Him, our thought process will change from what "I want" to what "God wants". We start learning what things we don't really need and how those things can hinder us from God. God loves to bless us, but many times we do not see it as God's blessing and we "delight" in the creation rather than the Creator. We have to keep God as our focus and pray that we, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." Matt. 22:37b
